Back when we were younger the grain elevator was on the east side of our town, more grain cars and runs now. Our alley would have cinders, then they went to oiling the alley, we kids called it tar. I guess you get used to the toots of the train, the house rattles a little and some times the sound is louder then other times. When I was a child we always played by the tracks, we had forts and places to play. That wasen't a busy track though, so there was no danger. Except when we fell on the cinders and jagged rocks of the alley. I have many scars from falling. I always heard there was a whistle pattern...like maybe 3 shorts and 1 long as they approached a crossing.. I don't remember for a fact now. But I swear some of the engineers used to pull that whistle from the east side of town till they went through the west side. When my brother Tommy got out of service he worked on the trains. Engineering them at times. We grew up about a block from the tracks...so I have always heard the whistles. My father in law was killed by the train the day after he retired. That was a tough time for our families. He was distracted, it wasn't the engineers fault. Still sad. I wonder if I would like them as much if I lived right next to them like your sister does and heard them all the time? haha. You know, my grandfather worked for the railroad, and one day it was very foggy and stormy day, and they didn't see or hear the train. They all died and it was such a terrible accident.
