I went into town this morning and bought three cheap...and I do mean cheap mums..$2.50 each. They are a pretty rust color. I planted them by the mailbox. If they do not last beyond this fall season..it will be fine. The limpy green plant is pachysandra.
I pulled it up from this flower bed . I bought a flat of this ground cover while we lived in town. I think I have grown a dozen flats of it. Plus given many bunches away.
It does not grow too tall and has a little yellow flower right in the center of each stem.
While I was in town, I went to the park. Here's the newer type of jungle gym. It's made of nylon ropes.. There's a couple little climbing pads on it too. I mean really.....now kids can't conk their heads on metal bars...what kind of fun is that? LOL. Recycled trees for the mulch here.
This is the toddlers' play area. They have all plastic equipment, which is safer. But look at the ground.
It's shredded tires. I'm just not into this whole heartedly. I would rather see just plain old grass or mulch. I worry about what could be in these recycled tires.
Now this is awesome recycling. All the benches in out park now are made from recycled plastic lids. Plus they are donated for every purpose or group. We have a setting of four benches all dedicated to the vets of all wars.
This bench is for all vets. I notice today there are some now in a newer color of tan. They were up by the gazebo.
This is also a good recycled project. The little sheltered area for the water fountain . Instead of tearing it down, they just got a new fountain. Painted up in a bright color with cartoon like drawings on it. Love this. There's a yellow one by the toddlers' area.
Hope everyone's enjoying their week. XO
I always completely forget about mums until the fall comes and the summer flowers are gone, and then I think, "Oh, I should have planted some."
ReplyDeleteJo(e) Mums are a hardy plant and will come back many years ...if it's not super fridgid in winter or for long periods of time. Get a least one in your favorite color. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
Deleteyour town is really doing its part to recycle!! I think the ropes are a great idea,, like u said no more bonking of heads, and my gosh I know all about head bonking!!
ReplyDeleteLaurie, I remember bumping my head on the metal bars trying to climb higher. LOL. The rope gym is not so loose a child could get caught or chocked on it. It'll last if the big goofy delinquents will stay off of it at night. No one is to be in the park after 10:00 p.m. but there are almost grown kids roaming around looking for trouble. Where are their parents...well it's too late by this age. Sad isn't it. ?? Now no more bonking your head pretty lady. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteI am sure those mums will thrive with the love and nourishment you give them.
ReplyDeleteLove the recycled plastic benches. Wow!
Munir, I loved the color of the mums...they look so much like the color of autumn. I know you like recycling. I think those benches are very nice. they will last thru the weather and not need painting or sanding and will never be as hot as metal ones. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteSusie, it certainly is approaching that time of year for Mums. I will probably wait until Sept. and then buy some for my urns on the front porch. A few years ago that tire mulch was all the rage. I read something about it, but can't remember what it was. Anyway our schools have now removed it from their playgrounds whatever it was. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
Jann, I love the look of mums in urns on a porch or along steps of a stair. We just had a thing about ground up little bead like things in the artificial grasses for soccer fields...I am not sure it was from tires or not....just too scary. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteSuch fun recycling projects! They add such color to life!
ReplyDeleteHi Jacqueline, We need to recycle things more...I loved the bench ideas. I will try to get more info on those. I just remember they were collecting the lids and water bottles at the farmers market for a couple years. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteHow cool they are recycling...such a great thing to do..and I love the bright water fountain.
ReplyDeleteBj, I can remember drinking from the old water fountain that was there for many years. Actually there were a few in the park and around our town on the street corners. I think there is one left at the north side of town near the old train depot. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteI really like mums, but never have any luck with them. I also like that ground cover and I'm going to look for it and see how it does here in the heat. Good job on all the recycling. I'm not totally sold on the ropes, but what do I know. The jungle gyms were dangerous, huh? How did we survive all the stuff that we played on?
ReplyDeleteNonnie, You will love that pachysandra...it is good in shade and the sun. Hardy as can be. spread on it's own or just a couple pieces put into the dirt and it will grow a big clump. But I would not call it invasive. I love it. My husband likes it better than the English ivy....which he hates trimming back off the trees. Yes, I could almost invision skinned shin slipping on the ropes.LOL. But hey, just like you said , "how in the world did we all survive. I hope we aren't raising a bunch of whimps by protecting then from everything. LOL. I swear it's a wonder all of us siblings didn't kill one another. We were climbing trees, jumping off the shed, playing ball like the Yankees all the time. LOL. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteLove seeing things recycled, but I'm with you on the tire under the playground... plus with falls too. Mums look great and I love them because they are so hardy! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Jill
Hi Jill, I am going to do some checking on this tire playground thing. I am not the only who is not all for that. Plus there's no way I child could sit in that. Mums are one of my all time favorite flowers for the hardiness. I do know that if the plant grows tall the rain can knock it down just like peonies. I am thinking of making some little fencing to hold them up. Not the one I just planted. LOL. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteI love that they are doing a lot of recycling for some items but I'd still rather see sand under the swing sets and jungle gyms, just old fashioned I guess! Enjoy the rest of your week! Blessings, Cindy xoxo
ReplyDeleteCindy, There's a flower bed where the park used to have a big sandbox...cause cat like to use that a big litter box...too nasty...so they won't use sand. I just remember we would go down the slide and land in dirt or a puddle if it had rained. LOL. Now the slide are plastic tubes...so kids won't get burned from a hot sheet of metal. That is an improvement. I just don't like the idea of recycled tires around toddlers. I would even fear some would put it in their mouths....you know they have to be watched like your a hawk. I see young moms on their phones too often. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteThat jungle gym makes me nervous- I would worry some kid would get their head stuck in there and get strangled. I'd rather see wood chips or grass there myself for them to land on. I guess the recycled tires is less maintenance and hopefully provides some cushion but who knows just how safe it really is. I do like some of these things like the park benches that are made from recycled plastic. I've planted mums that don't seem to come back and some that do. Either way at only $2.50 a piece you can afford to enjoy them with no promise of their return! Fall will be here too soon! I love every minute of it but unfortunately winter soon follows and that's my least favorite time of the year! Oh well I guess it makes us appreciate the other seasons all the more!
ReplyDeleteLiz, I never even thought about kids hair getting in the rope. That would be horrid. I just am not crazy about those shredded tires being around kids...especially toddlers...who put things in their mouths. I am so with you Liz..winter is my least favorite time of the year. Let's enjoy all the sweet days we can. Bless you, xoxo,Susie
DeleteA lady I work with belongs to a ladies club that sells gorgeous mums every year. I just ordered 4 yesterday. Fall is my FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR!
ReplyDeleteOh that is going to be wonderful in your flower beds. I bought two orange ones 3 years ago from the boy next door ..He was selling them for his group at school. They are so really orange, they look great with pink too. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteThe mums look cute under the mailbox, Susie!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the tire thing...yuck. Plus it's dirty. I do love the whole idea of recycling tho. I always forget about planting mums until Fall too. lol
Love to you.
Debbie
xo
Debbie, I just do not like the tire stuff around little ones...you know how some toddlers will put things in their mouths if you aren't watching their every move. Too scary. Love you too sweet friend, Susie
DeleteBy golly, here I am Susie. I spoke to you in today's blog in answer to your comment the last one I did a few weeks ago when I was able. I am thrilled to be a friend. Thank you for letting me be a part of your world. xo
ReplyDeleteHi Carole, So glad you came by. It will be fun blogging together. I miss our friend Beth...so does Boston Boy. He blog back and forth with her for a long time. Blessings to you, xoxo,Susie
DeleteThe parks around our new home are very much like this one. I love the benches! I enjoy taking the littles one.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I am so glad you have some parks to take the grands to and enjoy. I'll have to post some info on those benches.. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteSusie, your mums are so pretty and perfect for the Fall season. I really admire how well you and Ted take care of your home. It's very nice to see, Susie. You have such a lovely park, and it's one of the places that I enjoy to go to read, think, and pray. :~)
ReplyDeletelove, ~Sheri
Sheri, I have always loved our park. It's getting more modern each years...safety wise for the kids. I love seeing some old things saved...such as the fountain shelter. The shuffle board courts and the horseshoe pits. I like hearing people play horseshoes...the clanging of the shoes.:) I hope I can keep the weeds down now that most of them have been cut or pulled. Blessings, love you, Susie
DeleteHi Susie, Visiting you from Connie's! I was just thinking it is about time to get some mums! It is seeming more like fall here. I don't like the shredded tires for the playgrounds either. Nancy
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy, Thanks for visiting. :):) I was looking around today and you can see the tinge of fall starting. Some drying at the bottom of the corn stalks, some leaves looking not so green. We have a tulip poplar tree and they have shed some yellow leaves already. Nancy I think I will look up that shredded tire on playgrounds thing...just doesn't seem to be sitting right many of my commenters. Blessings to you and yours, xoxo,Susie
DeleteHi Susie, can you believe it's time for mums already? Where did summer go? Love the benches and things made from recycling. Thanks so much for commenting and visiting my blog! I'm so glad you found me - I will enjoy reading your blog posts! Jane
ReplyDeleteHi Jane, Glad you stopped by. I will be visiting your site , to see what you are doing . My mums have bloomed earlier this year. they are kind of leggy and I cut them to the ground every year.. Blessings to you and yours, xoxo,Susie
DeleteSusie, I love your flowers around your mailbox! We have lots of that green plant with the yellow flowers in the center. They were really beautiful this year! Love your playground, I'm with you ...I'm not sure about those ground up tires. But the water fountain is adorable!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Gert
Gert, Our ground cover plant is hardy thing isn't it? Ours has done so well, I have pulled much up and throw in the weed dump. I like that some of the old metal things are now plastic and do not get so hot if the sun is on them. I think the black of the old shredded tires would make that area hot. I just don't like it at all. I need to get a picture of the last standing water fountain in our town. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteA lot of decks now are made from recycled plastic..I wouldn't spend a lot on Mums..They don't last in to fall...Maybe if they are planted in the ground, they last longer..I love them for fall but they just don't last..
ReplyDeleteMissy, I wish I had those decks. LOL. Truly easy ...just washing should make them nice again. Our area must be very good for mums...I plant them because they are easy . I do not have a green thumb. :):) Have a great Saturday, xoxo,Susie
DeletePS..Have a happy weekend..

ReplyDeleteNancy, I deleted this it was the same as the one I answered.LOL. I do that too.
DeleteMums, oh my goodness, that is great. How nice to have such a great park nearby. Must say, not to sure about ground up tires!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend!
Nancy
Hi Nancy... I love the mums...they have so many colors. The white is pretty til they brown around the edges. I just hope those tires work out..I just can't feel relaxed about them...why? Bless you, xoxo,Susie
DeleteI'm guessing shredded tire are very low maintenance compared to living grass. It's about money. I have no problem with the rest of the items in the playground. I do remember the metal monkey bars when I was growing up. Falling off those if you were on top was easily a 5 foot drop to the ground, but we survived.
ReplyDeleteBoston Boy, that toddler area is fenced in for safety...but then those tires are like..wth. Hey, we kids conked our noodles on every thing in that park. When that wasn't happening...our brothers were knocking our heads together. LOL. I think on how we thought life was darn good...but look how we pamper kids today....we must have been a tough lot. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
Deleteps. you may need some AC this weekend.
I buy new mums every fall! Some last through the year but I aw
ReplyDeleteLays need to freshen up a pot or two!
Linda, I would like for them to last...but at that cheap price..it won't be a big loss. I like them in pots also....They seem so fall like on a porch. Blessings, love, susie
DeleteHi Susie, Loved seeing the park; I love Mums, but this year our wild bunnies are eating all the blossoms and I'm not happy about that-which is why I put my latest on the porch-hopefully they won't dare coming up. Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Noreen
Noreen, My husband has lived trapped tow bunnies and I got one by hadn( I threw him into the corn field ) The rabbits ate all those proven winners I bought in Spring. Those petunias. It's the most I have spent on annuals and they got ate by bunnies. So I understand what you mean. the only flowers that survived were on the porch. LOL. Hope you have a fresh new week of fun. xoxo,Susie
DeleteLove the Mums!! Soon I will be buying mine to decorate the front porch for Fall!!
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was a kid and our play ground at our school was on concrete. if we fell, we just got up and brushes ourselves off!! Ha Ha!!
Thanks so much for dropping by!
Hugs,
Deb
Debbie, You always have the prettiest decorated porch. I love to see it. Yes, I remember just falling and getting back and going at it again. Maybe we were tough kids. I am surprised we aren't wrapping kids in bubble wrap till they graduate. LOL. Bless you, xoxo,Susie
DeleteI love your mums Susie. I never think of them till frost. I need to get some and try my luck.. I'd like to place some on my porch as well.. l I'm with you on that playground, mulch or grass would be better. Hugs, xo
ReplyDeleteSusie, I bet with your warmer weathers you could grow them easily. Their colors sure are fall. But I have orange ones that I like to put with the lavender ones. it makes a pretty bouquet. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
DeleteOur local park has switched to the shredded tires and they are not very attractive but they sure are bouncy when you walk on them. I love the water fountain.
