One Room School House....

This old place is deserted. It hasn't be a school for decades.  It is near our house.  It is more or less abandoned now.
It's on a big corner lot on division road, in Tipton county. There was a couple living here for a few years. I feel badly that I use to refer to the man as Mr. Dirt....he always looked a bit grungy.
The poor old fellow passed away two years ago. His family moved all his stuff out. Then just left the weeds to grow and the damage to take hold and destroy this old building. Another loss for our area.
Even the old trees, both of them, have died away. Makes me wonder , where is our county's monies. Why do they not just force sales of properties that are being neglected. Or fine the owners enough to let the county mow at least. No one has been here since the old fellow passed away. Just another sad blight in our county.
Today the wind is fierce and would fly your kite all the way to Albuquerque.....LOL...that's where I used to tell my daughters that things blew away to when they left things  out. The sun is shining and the it was 53 when I went to bingo this morning. Suppose to be up to 61 degrees. It's February, amazing.   Hope you are having a good day. XO

  2. What a shame. I see a lot of old schools being converted into community centers. Wish someone could fix this one up! Enjoy your weekend! Hugs!

    1. Thank you Diane. If it were in town, I think someone would do something with it. But it is outside of town about 3 miles. I think I will write a letter to our county council.Hmm. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  3. Such a sad end for the little school. We are having unusually warm weather, too. I think it was in the low 80's today.

    1. My father in law went to school there and his big sister was the teacher...or so that's the story he told me. :) We are having a couple pretty nice days here. Makes me yearn for spring. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  4. Oh, this just makes me sad! It's a shame an end like this comes to historic properties, but it does. I'm sure the little school house would have lots of stories to tell if it could. Thank you for popping in to see me.

    1. Hi Shelia, I just would hate to see this old school torn down...but then to watch it fall down is no better. Just sad. I am thinking of writing some letters to our council members. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  5. That's so sad. I've always hated to see these old places just fade away into the past. We've got several here and it breaks my heart. Hope all is well with you. Hugs, xo

    1. Susie, There's history in our old buildings...to be lost if they aren't saved. It's just so sad. I have seen this old place for years. Once I went to church there with my mom , when a family friend turned it into a church for one year. I do not know the owners . Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  6. Aw gee, that really is sad. My first thought was who pays the taxes. Does the town own the place now? Susie, do you just take a little day trip every day to find subjects to take photos of? I love that you seem to. It has been crazy windy here, too.

    1. Nonnie, That's what I mean about forced sales..if taxes aren't paid, how come it just sits there. The taxes can not be much , surely. But then we are not allowed to neglect our lawns, how does this one never get mowed.? When it's nice out, I take my camera with me when I leave home...then if I spot something interesting I can get pictures. :):) We had horrid winds yesterday. Today is going to be better. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  7. So sad to see the school house deserted. There are people around here who have redone buildings such as that, creating a real showplace. Windy here today, too, but high temp was in the low-sixties. xo Nellie

    1. Nellie, I would love to see it turned into a nice big house. If I had the money, I would try it. There a big school house down from one of my daughters and a family lives in it. I'd love to see inside. I think they have a gym. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  8. It always saddens me to see a perfectly good house go to ruin because of neglect. You'd think the relatives of the previous owner would sell and make a little money - and someone could have a nice house to fix up. We lived in an old restored school house one time - they are fabulous - such charm.

    1. JoAnn, When that old fellow and his wife moved in there, it was in better shape than now...but they were very poor. So I know they could not do any work on the place. I just wish someone could rescue it. If I had the money, I would give it a try. I am retired and have to watch spending. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  10. I do not remember you saying our stuff would fly away...at least I know better now! We were lucky yesterday and didn't lose any bird feeders, wind chimes or large branches.

    1. Well I did little girl...that Flatzy is in Albuquerque. LOL. Our feeder twirled and twirled...if a bird sat on them it was as if they were riding a merry-go-round. Kathy, our fat robin is still here, eating crabapples and now eating something off the ground. Hope he stays. Wish you were here today(sat.) it is so pretty out and going to be 60 degrees. We would find something sop fun to do. Love you sweetheart, mommy

    1. Bonnie, I think the bones of this old place are still very strong...but one that roof rots then it'll be a goner. Water is the destroyer of any building. I have been in this building a few times with my mom, when a family friend made it a church for about a year. A real country preacher and my mom loved that. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  13. Susie, I think that's nice that this old man's home was once a school house. So sorry to hear he passed away a couple of years ago. Didn't anyone ever buy the house afterwards?

Susie, I always like hearing about your town and the people in your town. I think the people in our towns make the town what it is, and that's why I love my town too. It's very old and has some rich history.

    Have a nice weekend, Susie.

    1. Sheri, I do think you love your roots and home town. I do too. That is one reason I hate to see this old place go to ruin when it could be saved if someone could do something soon. The man that lived there passed and his children cleaned out his things but I do not think they care about anything else. So sad. Blessings to you. Love you, xoxo,Susie

  14. Susie, What a shame that the school has become so desolate. I'm sure there are buyers out there that would love to restore it and use it as a home or business. The wind here has been fierce today-I went for a walk with a close friend and felt like I could blow away. It is 61, but those winds. Hope you have a great afternoon and day tomorrow.

    1. Noreen, I wish there were places we average citizen could go to find out things about our area. I am thinking of calling one of the councilmen. The county should mow that lot ...not let it look so nasty. Watch that wind. It was heavy today but nothing like yesterday. But we had record temps . Bless you, xoxo,Susie

  15. I agree with you Susie...there should be a way to save these older buildings or at least keep up the grounds. It's been in the 70's nearly every day here and the humidity today has been miserable. You should see my hair! :) Rain is expected tomorrow and we really need it.

I hope you're having a wonderful weekend my friend!

  16. Since they built a central school location in my city all the old school buildings have become condos and office condos. My old elementary school now belongs to Tufts University. Same with the three junior high schools and the old high school. All these condos are too expensive for me, though I would love to live in my old high school or grade school.

I bet you had your named carved in a desk some where. LOL. I may be just getting so old that everything makes me melancholy. Dang. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  17. Susie,

I am the owner of this little school house. Let me first apologize for the state of disrepair that it has been in the last two years. My sister was supposed to be handling the property and now I am.

It was my fathers property and I haven't had contact with him in 30 odd years or so. I live in Charleston, SC and it was quite the unexpected call I received from the local sheriff of his passing.

L&M is coming out tomorrow to mow the lawn and remove the trees and debris. They will be keeping up with the property from now on. I am currently working with a local realtor and an interested party about selling. If it doesn't sell, I will be coming up very soon to start giving the little school a facelift.

The school is very structurally sound and in restorable condition. it just needs some much deserved TLC which is now in the works.

Again, I sincerely apologize for the eyesore it has become and it is being addressed.

  18. Greetings Mr. Barr
I just wrote a reply, but I think it was erased accidentally. I found this blog about the Beach Grove School as I was searching for abandoned school houses. I am a historian, author and preservationist and very interested in this little school. I live in WI, but my daughter lives in Fishers, IN and my husband & I are preparing to relocate near her and her family. I see that your reply to this blog was 8/2016, have you been up to see the property lately? I am wondering on the internal condition?
    Thanks for your time.
