Our Old Buck Stove....

When we moved here, this buck stove was inserted into the fireplace opening. Honestly this thing has saved us many hundreds of  dollars in heating bills.
My husband loves it. He loves cutting wood, splitting wood, stacking and carrying wood....not me so much.. I have stacked and carried wood. Filled the wood box at the back door.  Cleaned out the ashes and hauled to the burn ring in the backyard. Doused with water to kill any embers that may be still alive. Dusted to the moon and back and did I mention dusted? You can barely stay on top of the dust.  You can see some dust in this photo. Have I ever told you how much I hate dusting. LOL
When I talk about  moving back into town, Ted says that Buck stove is going with us. Oh no way mister !!!  That dust producing monster is staying right where it is. If we ever have a fire place again, it will be gas logs.  Well that's my whining for today. :):) Had to get that off my chest. Ha.
Today is to be somewhat warmer, maybe 40 degrees.  Hope your day is a good one. XO

  1. Oh, I totally get it, Sister! LOL It's always so dusty from the wood burning stove and also wood chips that get dragged in have to be swept up nearly constantly. But we've saved thousands on fuel because of our wood burning stove. I kinda have a love/hate relationship with it. Have a wonderful day, and don't even bother to dust. LOL

  2. We have 2 gas fireplaces and my husband loves them even more than I do. We'd always had wood burning ones and a stove like yours once. Don't miss them at all.

    1. Janet, This is a great stove for saving money and making warmth....but cleaning all the time is endless. thank goodness we don't have to cook on it. LOL. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  3. Yes, I hear you. I have burned wood and am around those burning pellets. I am much happier with oil when it is the price it is now.

    1. Vee, We have LP heat here and while it was so high a couple years ago...I was even liking this stove. I am so thankful we do not use it year round...because I would be bald from tearing my hair out. LOL. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  4. It sure looks wonderful, unique, and cozy! But the dust - yes, lots of dust and ash made, I'm sure! I guess you can start calling it "firewood glitter" or something! "That's not dust, that's firewood glitter!"

    1. LOL, I never thought of that. Yes,some times I can write my name in the "glitter" on the coffee table. :):) Soon, we can stop making so much dust.30 days till spring. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  5. Susie, now I know we are sisters.....dusting is my least favorite thing to do! But I do like that wood burning fireplace, maybe because when we moved into this house, it didn't have a fireplace. Still have to put one in. I bet this stove is hard to keep clean though. I noticed the copper tea pot on there, that's so cool.

    1. Sheri, I used to tease my girls...I would tell them to spray the cat with Endust then chase him thru the house to dust it. LOL I am to the point where I don't wash all the walls down once spring is here...you know the spring cleaning ritual. Yes, that old copper pot was use for humidity. We have a new humidifier now. I want gas logs next time. I am not a good pioneer...honestly, I am getting too old to rough it. LOL. Blessings, love you girl, xoxo, Susie

  6. We "graduated" from a log-burning fireplace to a gas fueled one when we built this house! Never will go back!:-)...xo Nellie

    1. Nellie, the odd thing, we had gas logs in town. We use LP for cooking and heating here. But Ted loves this stove. I like the money savings...but I am almost to the age of thinking does the savings add up to all the cleaning.LOL. Not in my book. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  7. I love my wood stove for the money it saves me in heating oil but the work is another story!! However, as long as I'm able to carry wood I'm going to keep using it. When I can no longer haul wood up a flight of stairs the gas fire will come in!

    1. These stove make wood burning more economical. Saved us a small fortune when the fuel( LP) was so high . But oh the work is getting to be a big pain to me. It's like constant , You can't let it go, or oh my gosh. I keep telling my husband I would not be a good pioneer. LOL. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

    1. Missy, It's the cleaning out of the ashes that makes the dust. So whie we are burning wood everyday thru these really cold times, it takes more cleaning of the ashes ...then that's more dust for me. LOL It's endless while the wood burning season is here. I do not mind an occasional fire during early spring or fall...they aren't as big a fires. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
      p.s. It was 40 degrees today !

  9. A wood stove works so well at heating a home. I don't have one here in Florida but for some reason we have DUST! I've been doing some extra cleaning this week and trying to get ahead of it! lol Hugs!

    1. Diane, That dust is probably from me taking out the ashes. LOL. I truly hate dusting and I hate a dusty house...so dusting in endless during this wood burning season. I am ready to open some windows for airing out our house. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  10. I always did want to be a pioneer woman. We used to have the same buck stove with a copper kettle similar to yours in our old house. I have smaller free standing stove at the lake. I don't mind the work it takes...I just love to have a fire. The thing is, it's rarely cold enough to have a fire here. My mother-in-law has gas logs and she loves them. I'm sure you will, too. Have a great evening.

    1. Laurie, I used to say my idea of roughing it, was carrying my own luggage. LOL. I some times feel I have stepped back in time. You could use one of those little electric heaters that looks like a small fireplace. We had 40 degrees here today...that was very nice. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

    1. Blondie, Ted makes some swipes at cleaning around it...lOL I have accused him of living like an old mountain man if I didn't clean up behind him. :):)He would probably consider dust as character. Hoping soon to be done with wood burning. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  12. I love a fireplace and can spend long hours just staring into the flames. I guess mine is not as dusty as yours and we don't have the cold winters you do. I do admire those stacks of firewood I see in some of your photographs!!! Glad you vented!!! Bet you even felt better!!!!

    1. Linda, I am thinking our fires are probably bigger and go on for hours, so the actual box of the stove fills up with more ash. I try my best to dump the little shovels of ash into the scuttle so carefully...but I see the dust float off. So I just go ahead and dust after cleaning out the stove. We try to only burn hard woods. Never burn pine, because of the tars . Hoping we will son be done with burning wood for the year. Blessings, love you, xoxo, Susie

    1. Ann, I do not know if I am getting lazy or flat wore out.LOL. I truly believe my husband would burn our furniture to have a fire if he was ever out of wood. LOL He's almost a caveman at times. He's gone today and if he were here he'd make a fire with the wind blowing so hard there's advisories on TV...but not me. I am not making a fire till the wind die down. :):) Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  14. I will never forget the smell and warmth of my granny's wood burning stove. Loved it and wouldn't mind having one myself. This is great!

  15. I'm with you on the dusting! I would rather iron than dust and that's saying a lot! There's so much construction going on around us and the wind blows all that dirt constantly. It's impossible to keep things dusted well or to maintain a clean car. Thanks for letting me vent too! :)

  16. I really like that stove! It probably wouldn't be practical where I live or will live in the near future, where ever that will be. In the future I would consider moving to New Hampshire. Less people and more space and it's not that far from here where my roots are. Also less expensive. In the 60's yesterday and it will be in the 50's today. Beautiful weather but this is New England...

    1. Boston Boy, Wood burning is for people who can get their own wodd...my lord, I would hate to have to buy this stuff..Probably would be cheaper to just use our LP. I just gripe because it's dusty when cleaning out the firebox of the stove.LOL. Hey, the older I get , the less I want to do. I want to ring a bell and someone bring me a cool drink. I'd love to read more about your roots. Your family from Italy and see more pictures.LOL. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  17. There's just something special about chopping wood, loading it into the house and throwing it in the stove and watching it burn. Sure it's a bit of a mess but I think it's worth it! Although I can definitely see why you would want to go with a cleaner option.
