Emma's Chickens...

We took a twin sized bed to my daughter's for Emma. She's changed her mind about her bedroom décor ...again. So now it 's a bed with a bookcase headboard and drawers under the bed. She's giving her futon with the bed on top to her other grandma for the lake cabin.
These are Emma's chickens. Well they belong to the whole family...but Emma gathers the eggs at times.  I never got a photo of her when she found the first egg. Oh how I would have loved seeing her face.
She has black chickens, red chickens, and these that are black but really golden looking about their heads. Sprinkled along the back too.
Here's little red hen...I used to read that story to my girls.  I love this pretty chicken.
Matt (Emma's Dad) has made a bigger pen for the chickens to run around. Hawks have grabbed a few when they have been let out ...so that's why they have a newer pen. Plus Sam (family dog) likes to pet them just a little too hard. LOL
The chickens have worn the grass off this area...just like we did as kids running a ring around our parents house on the corner. They have even dug some holes. Ted says they like to get in the hole to keep cool. I am a city slicker, don't know lots about farm animals. To me chickens are farm animals. LOL.
Liz gave me some eggs while we were there and I forgot them.. So now I'll pick some up on Sunday.  Seems more and more people are raising chickens for their own eggs.  Probably a good idea.
Hope you are all feeling great today. XO

  1. Looks like a great set-up to me! Chickens are really pretty, I think. My niece raises chickens for eggs. She spent $60 on a Vet to have one of them stitched up after a dog got ahold of it.mI thought that she'd just put her in a pot, but she loves her hens. I imagine that Emma loves hers, too.

    1. Vee, I do not know if I could spend money at the vet for a chicken.:) It's hard to cuddle with a chicken I would think. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  2. More and more people are keeping chickens, even in urban areas. Are they noisy?

  3. I'd never be able to eat chicken if I had them as a pet. I'd be the worst farmer ever!

    1. Japolina, We would get free chicks at Easter from the Hi-Line chick company. Our parents only let us so we could raise them to eat. Sad but true...yes we ate them anyways...when you are hungry it's hard to think of it being a pet.. I know I would be a horrid farmer...and God help us all if I had been a pioneer...forget it. !! I do not ever want to can food or skin food or pluck food..Now I can fish and clean them...but that's it. LOL. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  4. When I was a young colleged age gal, I had chickens-but they always turned out to be Roosters, since we didn't live in the country we had to get rid of them. Emma's are so pretty; I imagine the taste of fresh eggs is so good. Hope you have a great weekend!

  5. Hi Susie! Oh, those are so good looking chickens. I'm a city gal too but my grandparents had a farm and I was just scared to death of the chickens. They weren't in a pen and just ran around the yard and they would chase me! :) Thanks for popping in to see me.

    1. Shelia, when I was about 6, our neighbors had a mean old rooster and it would chase everyone. Scarier than a dog. It amazes me that chicken don't just wander off when they are not in a fenced area. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  7. Susie, I've always wanted to have chickens in my back yard. My home is small when we downsized, so no room here. Emma must have so much fun spending time with the chickens and gathering their eggs. I like that first one. She's got a lot of red on her. : )

    1. HI Sheri, Emma does like her chickens. She was so cute gathering the eggs. I saw her with a stick poking it thru the fence...I asked her if she was poking a chicken, she said "No, I was poking a spider, so I could get the egg." LOL. Love that girl so much. . Blessings, love , Susie

  8. I asked mama one time why granny never had grass in the back yard. She said because we had chickens and the chicken wore the grass out. She always told me stories about the chickens. Of course, she hated them because she had to ring their necks and put in hot water and put the feathers off.

  10. Cute photos! My first mother-in-law raised chickens but would never eat anything with chicken. She did the thing that farmers did/do to end the chicken's life and I understand. I can't even talk about it! :)

  11. My step son asked me tonight what my favorite time was down here on the ranch. Gathering eggs was a big one. They are still warm when I pick them up and they are such pretty colors. Emma is blessed to have these 'chicken' expperiences!!! You are such a good grandma!!

  12. Such cute little chickens, I'm sure she loves them. I have a few friends who raise chickens for the eggs, here in the city! With the price of eggs at the market, I don't blame them. Have a super great weekend! Blessings, Cindy

    1. Cindy, I was shocked when I saw that the store where I shop has priced their own store brand eggs at 4 dollars a dozen...crazy prices. I can sure see why people are trying to raise chickens for the eggs. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  13. my neighbors behind us have chickens and they were out a lot in the beginning of summer, I loved seeing them running around in my yard and torry, marla and I would sit out back and watch them. they are so funny! But then another evil neighbor complained about them to the town and now the chickens have to be cooped up. poor chickens! I have to say, I loved seeing the chickens out running around in my yard a heck of a lot more then hearing the others evil neighbors dogs barking all the time. maybe we should complain about them! lol! sometimes I wish I could go on a free the chickens mission! lol! sneak over and let them all out! lol! but I wont.. have a great weekend!

    1. Vivian, You have made me laugh...I too can't stand the barking of dogs...there is no sense in it. People need to exercise and then take the dog in if it continues to bark. I like the way chickens can roam around but never really run away. I know when they are penned they wear the grass away. But truly how much damage does a free range chicken do?LOL.
Maybe the chicken drives the dog nuts. :):) Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  15. I'm a city slicker too (actually a small town girl) so I consider chickens to be farm animals too. I think it's good for children to be raised with animals, whether they are pets or livestock.

    1. Linda, I can remember wanting a horse of my very own , growing up..LOL. I think all kids wanted one. We did have chicken around our yard a couple times. Never any cages or pens...just running loose. We lived at the edge of town. But I think back then many people in town had chickens. Seems we are going back to those times. More people are gardening too. My twins have gardens , Liz's has chicken,& Karen did have rabbits but sold them all . Blessings, xoxo,Susie
