Woo-Hoo, The Porch/ Deck Is Finished.....

This is the way our porch/deck floor was looking this summer....faded and wore out.  You can see the rain soaking in.
Here's the deck stripped of everything and power washed.
Staining this thing seemed to be turning into a career.  It was either super hot , or I had other things to do.  Ran out of stain before getting finished. Due to some of  Ted's spillage . LOL
Back to this big store for more stain.  I let Ted go in without me...so I would not be tempted to go thru the garden area. :):)
The color before was honey oak.  Now it's canyon brown. Much darker, but it works with the brown trim on the house and shop. Can I tell you, I am thrilled to have this project done-done-done !!  I stained the last five 12 foot boards and all the spindles, trimmed two trees and pulled weeds from two beds , Wednesday.  I was wore to a frazzle. :):)  Takes me longer to get things done and longer to spring back...getting old you know.  Hey, I am still moving though. That's good.
Went to play bingo with my sisters at the senior center...just lots of laughs and talking. Then sister Pam and I went to lunch together.  She and I worked together for 30 years. We know a lot of the same people.  We always enjoy our visits.
Wishing all of you a wonderful weekend. XO

  1. Susie - Love your deck! Looks great! I'm still waiting for the time period required to have my floor and deck stained and sealed. Hope it looks as good as yours

  2. Judy, I know there's a time of "drying" of the chemicals in the deck boards before they can be stained or painted. I think paint would peel too often. I do not know for sure. I am sure your deck will look awesome ....cause everything you do looks good. I am envious of your screened porch. I was wanting a 3 season room when we did this porch/deck. Oh well at least I have a sweet place to sit , to read and write. Blessings to you, xoxo,Susie

    1. Sandi, LOL, honestly I took so long, I was a bit embarrassed . While I was trimming the trees, the neighbor man yelled, "hey, the deck looks good.. " he was probably happy I had it done too. See what I mean. Some times I wish we all lived closer, we could help each other get things done. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  4. Looks really nice...such a great load off the shoulders when a big project like that is done. You shall always look at the floor when you walk on the deck and admire the lovely color. I always look at my ceiling when I walk into the kitchen....such a load off my shoulders to know that the ceiling will no longer leak in a bad storm.

    1. Louise, I am so glad your ceiling is nice again and no leaky roof. I think we have to stay on top of our homes all the time, or so it seems. I am so thankful that my husband and I are pretty handy working together. As soon as the deck's stain has had time to dry for about a week, I am going to wash the walls down, We taped them off so no stain got on the siding. But just dirt from the farm fields, you know. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

    1. Judy, Thank you.. It would have gone faster if we had used a sprayer...we did it with brushes. We built that deck in one of the hottest Julys ever. I dug as many post holes as the husband did...so I carried my share of work. I can tell I am aging now, it hurt my wrist to crawl around on my hands and knees to do the brushing. :):) Hope your weekend is a great one also. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  6. Very pretty and a lot of hard work. Our porch needs done, I am not sure if it will happen this season, depends on weather. So much to do. Fall is almost here. Happy Weekend, Mary

    1. Hi Mary, So glad you came by. If we could just hire people who would do the work right...LOL. We are not so picky, but after getting taken a few times...we just do things ourselves. There was some painters spraying the neighbors barn and the boss came over and asked if we could had any jobs we wanted done. I think he thought I would hire him to do the deck...I told I was just getting ready to do it myself. I hope he didn't drive by here laughing at how long it took me. Blessings, to you for a wonderful weekend. xoxo,Susie

    1. Missy, Some times I surprise myself. Though there have been days where I feel I am being followed and it turns out to be my own butt dragging behind me. :):) Know what I mean? Missy, It rain yesterday morning, then again last night, it is raining now too. The lawn needs it , but I was thinking of sitting on the porch all weekend. LOL. Hope you can enjoy your Saturday. xoxo,Susie

  9. Your deck looks great, Susie. You can sure outwork me, just doing half of what you did would have worn me out. I'm not getting as much done as I'd like, but I tell myself there's always tomorrow. Then when tomorrow comes, I find myself saying the same thing again. lol!
    Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Cheryl, It seems to have taken me over a month to finish this project. I was beyond ready to be done with it. So while I was all sweaty I decided to trim the trees, it was the red bud tree and the birch....some of the branches were hanging down to be in the way of Ted mowing. I have the plum bush and the weeping cherry to go. I have let my flower beds go the past couple years. It just gets to be too much. But now here I am trying to catch up...wowwee it's tough on this old bird. Hope you have a great weekend , xoxo,Susie

    1. My favorite adage is, many hands make light work.... my husbands hands weren't here as much as I would have liked . LOL.. I can say a 2 inch brush isn't fast work. It was the getting down in between the deck boards that was tough. The rain is at least beading up on the deck today....not soaking in. If I lived near by I would pitch in and help you. It's kind of hard to get some people interested in working...even if you pay them. LOL. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  12. Hooray for getting the deck finished! And before winter weather. I know you are happy to not have that looming over you. That was a big project.

Glad you got to spend time with your sister.

    1. Oh Kathy, believe me , being done before winter was seeming to be a goal once I started the staining. LOL. If I had some tap shoes...I would be out there dancing on that deck, that's how happy I am to be finished. Wish you lived near by so you could hang out once you get retired. LOL. 1. Susie, Usually Ted and I are faster getting things done. He has a part time job now and so he is never around to help out...or so it seems. Plus he bought the kind of sprayer and that were the spillage came in to play. I just said , let's use the brushes...and it went from there. I hope I never have to do that again. LOL. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  15. Wow! You have been very busy! Those decks are a lot to f work. Tom always used the power washer, let it dry...then used a sprayer (like Ted had..I'm guessing) and coated it! Seemed weather never really cooperated either. It would take weeks, at least it seemed that way!! Bless you for working on yours!!

I read all your posts I've missed during this busy time. Love the fact that you got some special time with your 'great'. She is adorable! Hard to believe how fast Emma is growing!!

And what beautiful fall items at Hortons! Then those hummers! Amazing!!! We didn't get ours up this year;( So to see yours just brought a big smile to my face!!

    Blessings,
    Gert

  16. Hi Gert, Normally Ted would have used his sprayer...but the nozzle was messed up...so he went to Tractor Supply and they sold hima weed sprayer...well ted tried to spray with it and it did not spray..it squirted and that just made big globs of stain..which meant I had to wipe it down like mad...till I finally said , "stop please I would sooner use a brush than this. " So that is how we ended up using brushes. ..with Ted working part time , he did do some of the deck boards and the big band board , then I did the rails, spindles, and half of the deck boards. No easy and I do not want to do it like that again. LOL. Gert, you and Tom have been on my mind and absolutely in my prayers. I hope things improve this week. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  25. Susie, the deck looks great! I don't even want to go look at mine after seeing yours. My grandson did it 5 years ago--wait, maybe it was 7 years? I even asked my husband if we couldn't tear it up and put rock down. He looked at me like I was crazy but we're getting too old to go through this over and over and rocks should last longer than we will!

    1. Dewena, I think you sounds very sane to me....I wish we had made that deck/porch a 3 season room or made it out of that composite material so I would never have to stain it again. The years creep up on us. I want to work like I am 40 again...but oh boy I get achy all over . Blessings, xoxo,Susie
