Hummingbird Food....

About  3- 4 years ago at the Earth Fest , in a town south of here, I bought this cookbook. I liked that it had unusual recipes .
This Hummingbird food recipe  is one of them.  I thought I would give it a try.
The hummers seem to like it better than the last two store bought nectars. So from now on, I am only going to make this. I am not a good hummingbird photographer. I can be sitting on the porch watching them and they will be all over the feeders, even fighting for them. As soon as I get the camera, they seem to know. :):)   There's one sitting eating in this shot, but before I could zoom in, she was gone. I do love to watch them.
By the way there's a recipe in this cookbook that makes me laugh. It's called crock pot chicken.  Here's the recipe like it is written.  1 Box stove top stuffing , 4 boneless chicken breasts, thawed/uncooked., 1 can of cream of chicken soup.   Prepare stuffing mix. Layer in crockpot as follows: 2 chicken breasts, 1/2 the stuffing, 1/2 the soup(spread over stuffing) Repeat  layers.  Cook on low,  all day while at work ( this was what made me laugh).....These recipes are from a group of people who work in a factory near Indy.  So I could see they would be at work all day. God bless the working men and women.
Wishing everyone a good day.  As you slide down the banister of life, don't get a splinter in your career.  (from my quotes for the day calendar).  XO

  1. I like cookbooks from groups like that. There are always so old time tested recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation...recipes you don't find in other cookbooks. Enjoy your day! Sweet hugs, Diane

    1. Linda, I know some mom's give their kids all the family favorites and I bet some of these are from way back. You do not need a cabinet full of ingredients...which if so, I would never make it. I do not like too many ingredients. LOL. Bless you, xoxo,Susie

  3. My brother takes amazing pictures of hummingbirds. Hope on over to his blog www.explorationphotography.us to see them. They are really good and not just because he's my brother.

I like the recipe for the crockpot chicken and think I might actually try it. I do cook things like that while I'm at work. It makes life so much easier. I'll let you know how it turns out.

    1. Kathy, I am going to check your brother's site. Crock pot cooking is so handy when working. I like throwing things in a pot and letting it cook. I'll post a couple more of those recipes for you. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  4. Love this kind of cook book. They always have the best recipes. I have a few from old Church groups and the recipes are so great. Your hummingbirds are going to love the sweet nectar you make for them.

    1. Kris, I have a few church lady cookbooks too. I love that those recipes have been used for years. You know no one has gone hungry from a church gathering...so the food is good. LOL. I am going to make more of that bird food..they have been eating non-stop. Blessings for a great day, xoxo,Susie

  6. What a great recipe book! We love hummers but have never had any success in attracting them for some reason.
We made old fashioned chicken and dressing yesterday and it was delicious! Smelled like Thanksgiving at our house last night!

    1. Linda, I have made a recipe similar to the chicken one..but bakes it all in the oven. I love dressing. I know hummingbird love trumpet shaped flowers and red is their favorite. Hope you are keeping cool there. Today is getting muggy and the next week looks like the same. Blessings, love you, Susie

  7. Hi Susie, That cookbook looks wonderful. I've been wanting to start a hummingbird feeder, but haven't yet for fear that they would grow so dependent on it. We have lots of flowers that they get nectar from. I need to research the migration pattern and timing to know if it would work or not.
Thanks for sharing. Have a great day!

    1. Noreen, There a time limit for the hummingbird around here...it's from May to October....because they need to start their migration away from this area. They go as far to the islands in the gulf . Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  8. Susie, the hummingbird is a very cautious bird, maybe because of its size. They are truly my beloved bird, and if I saw a bunch of them or even one in my front yard, it would be such a blessing to me. I can see why they hover around your front yard. It's filled with beauty and love.

    1. Thank you Sheri, you are kind. You could look on line to see if the hummingbirds get to your area. I are so tiny and fun to watch. I am shamed that I have neglected some of our feeders...to keep the chipmunks away. No seeds out back has keep the doves away but also the chippies. Blessings, love, Susie

  9. My dad had thousands of hummers- just make sure you boil the water good to kill any bacteria- that will kill them and leave out the red food coloring- its chemicals they don't need. If you use that red feeder, that's all you need.
I cook like that much of the time. I end up with odds and ends in the cabinet, fridge and freezer and just dump and walk away. LOL
Its hot here today! It was nice yesterday and the day before, but the hot is here with no end in sight! UGH! Well, there is always November to look forward to now. Have a good night!

    1. The mixture I made I boiled awhile because I wasn't sure how long to do it...so glad I did . No I never used the coloring. I used to keep a Tupperware bowl in the fridge and add left overs and then when it was full it became soup. LOL. We do not want to waste. It is plenty warm here now and muggy. Thankful for those heavenly perfect days aren't you? Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  10. I keep forgetting to hang out our hummingbird feeder! I love watching those little creatures. I have an old cookbook with the hummingbird feed recipe, too. It also has a recipe for roast that makes me laugh. It says, "first take a 50 cent roast." Hahaha!,,,
    Have a great day.

  11. I'm not sure I know what a humming bird looks like and do they hum a specific tune? I could of sworn I heard an Elton John Medley coming from a tree out back.

    1. Now Paul, I think you have been drinking too much wine.LOL.. To me the noise they make is more of bumble bee buzzing....I think that's from the wings not any singing. Thanks for the laugh. Bless you, xoxo,Susie

  12. I always make my own nectar for the hummingbirds. You can make your own for the Orioles, too.
And I use to make that chicken recipe all the time.

    1. Hi Kathy, So glad you make your own nectar. I was amazed at how fast they are eating this. So is the oriole food the same? I am going to do that chicken stuff ...but I am not cooking it all day...I'll turn it on high. I made something similar but it was mushroom soup and it was baked in the oven. I liked it. I love you sweetheart, Mommy

  13. Thanks for the laugh. I took my hummingbird feeder down because I had seen any for a long time. When I did see them it was one every few days. I used three parts water to one part sugar. Works better than the store-bought stuff. Have a wonderful weekend Susie

    1. Missy, I got a shot of a hummer today..no so good as all your bird photos..but oh I was thrilled. I was wondering if less water would make it even sweeter for the birds. I am amazed at how quickly they have eaten this I am going to make more. Bless you, xoxo,Susie.

    1. Peggy, Oh dear this is not a church cookbook, it's composed by some factory workers. I went to look at that recipe just now..It's a marinade...doesn't sound good to me with Wiskey Here's the recipe: 1/4c.Jack Daniels, 1/4 c. soy sauce, 1/4c.mustard, 1/4 c. minced green onions, 1/4c. light brown sugar, 1 T.oil, 1 tsp. salt, 1 dash Worcestershire sauce and some pepper...combined all ingredients...use to marinade shrimp or scallops for 1 hour...or beef, chicken, or pork in the fridge over night. Let me know if you try this. LOL. I miss blogging with you Peggy..I'll come by now. xoxo,Susie
