At The Rail Yard...

This railroad yard is near my sister's house. She absolutely hates the trains.....I love them. But then I am not listening to them run all hours. But when I lived near the tracks , I loved when trains went by. Especially in the winter....it was a sign their was life out there in the cold. LOL  On the right of these big bushes is a home. I told my sister I bet the dish cabinets are locked shut. I can only imagine the dishes rattling.  This rail yard is near our depot.
When we were young, our parents told us to not be playing around the tracks. Some times we walked on the cross ties from one block to another though. You all know how kids can be. We were the good kids of the neighborhood too. LOL. Because if we were not we would be dead...cause our parents would have killed us. That is just how it was.  :):)

  1. I know what you mean about what kids get away with unawares. I used to ride a ten speed bike on the tracks for miles and miles. Clearly I was an idiot. Have a terrific day Susie.

    1. We never had bikes or I am sure we would have done the same thing.LOL. At least our big brothers would have. Speaking of bikes, one boy would come to our house and he was a popular boy when he rode his bike...we all took a turn on it before he left to go back home. :):) xoxo,Susie

  2. I lived in a railroad town and mama told us horror stories about the trains and playing on the tracks. My cousins would sneak out and go to the tracks and walk them and talk about boys, etc. I always think of Fried Green Tomatoes. I need to take a trip to Juliette GA sometime to the Whistle Stop Cafe.

    1. There's almost a sadness about a train whistle at night, that sounds far away. We used to hear the train with our windows open growing up. Open windows because we had no AC. :):0 blessings, xoxo,Susie

  4. There is a railroad track behind the cemetery which is across from my back door. In the beginning the noise bothered me but now i am used to it and don't even hear it.

  5. We had a wooden RR bridge over the creek behind our house where we lived as kids. We weren't supposed to go near the tracks!! My brothers would wait for the trains to come, then jump off the bridge into the creek. EEEEK!!
I miss the sound of the train whistle at night when it's really quiet out.
Have a happy Sunday sweet friend.

    1. Debbie, Don't you wonder how we survived at times. That is too scary jumping off the bridge. I like to hear the train if I am awake and feel so alone. I have had a great day so far. Blessings to you, xoxo,Susie

  6. We were good kids, too, but we loved best to play kickball in the street. Foolish and luckily no one ever got hurt, but it was a lot of fun. Have a great Sunday!

    1. Carol, I think about about some of the things every kid did growing up....so scary, but we became tough and survived. Even little towns' streets are too busy to play in now. Post some picture of your play mates if you have any. xoxo,Susie

  7. Susie, you are a girl after my own heart, as I love trains too. I wonder if I would like them as much if I lived right next to them like your sister does and heard them all the time? haha. You know, my grandfather worked for the railroad, and one day it was very foggy and stormy day, and they didn't see or hear the train. They all died and it was such a terrible accident. But to this day, trains remind me of my dear grandfather, and I still love them just the same. I loved your train post today, Susie.

    love,

    1. Sheri, Our uncle worked the crews that fixed the tracks. When my brother Tommy got out of service he worked on the trains. Engineering them at times. We grew up about a block from the tracks...so I have always heard the whistles. My father in law was killed by the train the day after he retired. That was a tough time for our families. He was distracted, it wasn't the engineers fault. Still sad. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  8. I grew up next to train tracks and we just got used to them! Now, however, sometimes we hear them VERY loud in the wee hours (even though they're fairly far away) and that's not fun-lol! Kind of weird how that works :)

    1. Susan, When you said the whistle sounds louder...I thought maybe it is, because of how many times there are train wrecks with casr/trucks. I always heard there was a whistle pattern...like maybe 3 shorts and 1 long as they approached a crossing.. I don't remember for a fact now. But I swear some of the engineers used to pull that whistle from the east side of town till they went through the west side. LOL. xoxo,Susie

  12. Oh gosh...we live 3 blocks away from the train tracks.......there's trains passing by at all hours of the day. I guess you get used to the toots of the train, the house rattles a little and some times the sound is louder then other times. When I was a child we always played by the tracks, we had forts and places to play. That wasen't a busy track though, so there was no danger. Except when we fell on the cinders and jagged rocks of the alley. I have many scars from falling. Guess that is part of childhood.

    1. Louise , You are rght, some place are not as busy as others. Back when we were younger the grain elevator was on the east side of our town, more grain cars and runs now. Our alley would have cinders, then they went to oiling the alley, we kids called it tar. That is a summer smell. xoxo,Susie

  13. I love trains. We've lived in two homes that were close to tracks. I loved hearing the whistle. Knowing either people or products were going somewhere.

    1. Wanda, I still love hearing the trains and seeing them. It is usually hauling grain now. I have only seen passenger trains on our east west tracks twice...but years ago, there were more. There is a small train out of Indy that comes to the Pizza Shack on occasions. xoxo,Susie
