Lilacs And Robins....

This  is my lilac bush. Growing so nicely this year. I brought the starts for this bush from my mom old house when she passed away, almost 9 years ago. Mom had three of the tallest lilacs in her front yard. They were cut down by the new owner last year. Mom used to let people pick bouquets of them all the time.
As I was on the west side of our house getting these photos , something else caught my eye.
In the block glass window, a robin had made a nest. Now she has four little babies to feed.
I got a little close for this shot. I did not linger as I saw the mom robin near by. I worry for these little guys. They are exposed to the rain , wind , and sun, where they are nesting. I am wondering why the birds aren't making their nests in the trees. There are so many trees in this area. Once last year, I was walking down our road and saw a nest on the ground by a telephone pole. It was next to the pole and it had 3 blue eggs in it, so I know it was a robin's nest.  Poor planning.
Up date on my daughter. She is home and doing well. Thankful for all your prayers. Wishing all of you a great Monday. XO

    1. Hi Janet, I just checked my burpee catalog, it says they can grow in zones 3 to 7. We are a five here. The fragrance of them take me back to my mom's front yard...How I used to hate that yard, thinking I would never see any of the world while stuck there...now I long to return to that yard. Growing older does that to us. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  2. Maybe they've found predators in the trees? I don't know. I just know birds build nests in the strangest of places.

    1. Brenda, I have seen hawks around here. But where this nest is, only a blind hawk would miss them. LOL. I pray they can grow and fly away before one comes around again. Hope you are doing good getting around. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  3. I can smell those lilacs from here! We actually have several blooming right now. They are beautiful! I think I'll cut a bunch for my cousin for tonight. We are having dinner for her birthday.
Your daughter will be ok. I've heard of so many people having thyroid problems and they are just fine on medication. I know what you mean about wanting everyone to just be healthy. Health problems are the worse. But she will be fine.
I bet your sisters have fun living so close together!

    1. Cindy, As soon as I finished this email...my sister Pam called and said our youngest sister Barb had a mini stroke. She ended up on the same floor of Methodist that our brother was on. Her husband just called and said , she is fine and no damage..Thank God. Cindy, some times it just pours...know what I mean honey. I called my daughter, she is on her new meds and says she feels fine. I called Ted's brother , who has been given 6 months to a year with mesothelioma...he was having a procedure done today. I go to the dentist Wed. I get scoped for my tummy next Tuesday...I need a vacation girl...can you go to Vegas?? LOL. I am wore out today already. It's that dang stress. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  4. So glad to hear your daughter is doing well.

I would have gladly taken those lilac bushes that were cut down! Finally, just this year, we are having more than a single little bloom on our bush! It isn't as vibrant a color as yours, though, but the fragrance is quite pungent! xo Nellie

    1. Nellie, When those new owners cut the lilacs down...I sent my daughter over to get some starts before. The lady had advised my sister she would cut them dow....so my oldest daughter got a start also. Her little lilac is about 2 feet tall. Mine took six years to bloom. I love smelling them but not so much in the house, as they are pungent. Bless you, xoxo,Susie

  6. I love lilacs and I'm glad you were able to re-grow a lilac bush from your Mother's bush, Susie. I saw a sad sight last year as a hawk ate an entire nest of baby robins! I guess that is why they don't make nests in the trees...too easy fro other birds to attack them?
Glad to hear your daughter is dong well!

    1. Pat< I actually think Mom would be happy knowing I go a start and two bushes are growing. My oldest daughter got some starts from the lady before she cut the bushes down. So she has a small little lilac...it'll take about 5 years for it to take.. I find just puffs os dove feathers, no wings...my husband says that is from the impact of a hawk grabbing one. Cats usually leave the wings. Thank for the good wish for my daughter. I spoke with her today...she is doing very well. Blessings to all of you Pat. I tell you girl, I miss your NYC photos. xoxo,Susie

  7. I would love to have that lilac bush. It's beautiful.

Interesting about the nest. Last year we had a tiny little wren build a best in a flower pot on the patio. I thought that was strange. The doves build a nest every year under our deck. Very smart.

    1. Nonnie, In town we had a basket hanging at the back door. Every time I opened the door, the dove would fly up and scare me . LOL. So any time after that I would put stick in the pot where they could not make a nest. Birds are persistent. Hope you are doing well. It is stormy here tonight..I will check the birds 1st thing in the morning. :):) Bless you, xoxo,Susie

  9. Hi Susie,
Glad to hear your daughter is home and doing well. Your little robin family is so cute. I had a Robin make a nest in my front door wreath one year. I think they like to make nests in the weirdest of places. Have a great start to the week.

    1. Hi Kris, All the years before out here...they make nest on the crook of the downspouts. I am not crazy about that. I saw a ruby throated hummingbird yesterday at the feeder. :) I loved that. Now tomorrow morning, I will have to check those robins...it's stormy here this evening. Hope you are feeling wonderful. I am going to take Karen to lunch on Thursday. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

    1. HI Kathy, I have missed you. Your cats may keep birds away from the house. I did see an oriole here last week. But I didn't have that feeder of jelly out and no oranges. But I did see a hummingbird. Love you, mommy

    1. Nancy, I need to read up to see how old they are when they fly away. If they fall out of the nest they will be in the lilies. Good hiding place. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  13. Susie, what a sight that must have been for you to see the robin's nest with the babies. They are soooo tiny, aren't they? Maybe they knew YOU lived there, and wanted to be close to a caring and loving soul. Birds are smart and they are cautious of many things, and the fact that she made her nest at your home means something so very special.

Great pictures, Susie, and I can smell your lilac bush from here. :~)

    love, ~Sheri

( please keep us updated about these precious robin birds, would you?)

I am so happy that you got a start of your mom's lilacs. Lilacs are such a big part of my childhood memories. Mine is blooming nicely this year, but not as nice as yours. Love the baby birds! Robins do not build sturdy nests, that's for sure. Have so many on the ground here from time to time, too. Makes me sad.
