Here is the entrance to the flea market. I want to tell you a few things about the trip on Tuesday. When you start into the Amish area, you will see some of the best tended gardens Every house has a garden, some are very big gardens, some families have two gardens.....not a weed in sight. They are very good gardeners. I think the women and children help with it all. Many years ago, I read in the paper an article written by an Amish lady. She told of a day in her life ......now I am not kidding, she did more in one day than most people do in a week. Busy ladies. When we were driving their roads, we saw every kind of cart being pulled by one little horse. We try to respect the horse and carriages, because it gets scary if the horse is spooked in any way. You may even see the driver out holding the reins and calming the horse down.
My brother was a state trooper up north in Indiana. He said some times the Amish would be drunk, and they just let the horse take itself on home ....so in other words the horse is driving. But even though they know the way home, they run stop signs, that is how the Amish man gets caught drinking. LOL...I think my brother was joking, don't you???? xoxo

My hubby and I shopped The Amish Markets in Almira, Ontario. Every other Sat for years. I thought Amish people never drank? What a surprise to know. That is dangerous if the horse leads the way home. Most of those farmers have families in the carriages. Hmmmm.
ReplyDeleteI sort of have to laugh. They wear black alot. Same outfit for the men. Now I think the ladies can have coloured smocks now.
ReplyDeleteI wondered how many wash the clothes on a weekly bases. As we bought the sausages from a man from his Amishes home. I tell you. It was not the cleanest surroundings even him bagging after we paid for the sausages. I noticed his fingernails sort of unkept. I mean they are in those dirty fields. Just me thinking. It did made me think twice for the homemade susages.
I've not been to Shipshewanna in ages. Sounds like you had a fun trip!

ReplyDeleteYour Amish Garden looks like a wonderful place to shop, Susie! I always enjoyed visiting the Amish areas of Lancaster, Pennsylvania over the years. I'm sur eyour brother may have had that experience once in a while, as I'm sure the Amish can be fallible just like any other people.;)

ReplyDeleteI found your blog on Japolina's site and thought I'd take a peak...Can't help but share that we are "neighbors" I love going to Shipshe and love that it is a hop, skip and jump away from me here in Northern Indiana...You are the first person in the blog world that I've come across in my neck of the woods! Hoosiers unite! Love seeing the sites in and around Amish Acres...have you ever been to Essenhaus? I think it's in or around Nappanee...just outside of Elkhart county...It's a little drive for me, but worth every minute! Amish are really neat people...I'm following you now.
