Bunny Season Is Near....

I am thinking chocolate bunny season...yum. These little cuties are at the store in town. I think I told all of you that my daughter's neighbor gave them 19 rabbits. It's all Savannah can do to name them ...LOL I know the girl has tried. :) She is a huge animal lover. When  we were at their house on Wednesday, she showed me her new parakeets. Very pretty, one blue and one green. I know they are named. Oh by the way, Emma is going to name a chicken after papaw and one for me. So they will be Teddy and Susu.
Karen has told Savannah , she  can't keep every rabbit, because as new ones are born they need to give away or sell some of the older ones. She doesn't really like that idea, but she doesn't know some may end up in a stew either. shhhh.
Growing up our father and brothers hunted rabbits. We have eaten them and even our pet chickens, after they were raised. I am never eating rabbit again, and I do not want to eat pet chickens. Being poor had a lot to do with the menu at our house.
Hope you are having a good day. We have heavy  winds and it's overcast.....another good day for chores. Maybe clean the hall closet.  xo

  1. Susie, I too had that kind of "growing up". My grandfather and grandmother raised rabbits and chickens for us to eat. I know it was a necessity then, and I also remember how good that fried chicken was.

    1. Peggy, when you say how good that fried chicken was...made me think of my mom's fried chicken. It was always crispy. As time went on and fire alarms came out, mommy frying chicken would set the alarm off....so we would say when that smoke alarms goes off the chicken is done. LOL, xoxo,Susie

  2. Hi Susie, It is rainy here today and I will be indoors cleaning/organizing, too.
Our community is called Rabbittown because during the depression they raised rabbits here for eating.
Savannah surely has a lot of pets. I bet the parakeets are beautiful.
We are thankful for this latest rain as we planted grass seed!!!
    Love to you this weekend.

    1. That is interesting information about your town. We need to get a bit of shade mixture for a low spot in the back yard. Enjoy this day, xoxo,Susie

  3. I've never had rabbit. No clue as to how they taste. I've had freshly killed chicken on my grandfathers farm but that was 49 years ago. I got to witness the whole process from pen to plate. Something different for a city boy.

    1. Yes, B.B. I have seen the neck wringing and the feather plucking...p.u. I would not make a good pioneer. I think lots of people like rabbit ,but I do not ever want any more.LOL. Hope you are marking off the days till your vacation. xo,Susie

  4. How traumatic to eat the pet chickens. That is very sad. 19 bunnies are going to multiply very quickly. I hope you find homes for all of them so they don't end up in the stew. Have a great weekend.

    1. Maggie, we got the chicken from a hatchery at Easter. Our parents only let get a free chicken for future food. Really sad. Savannah doesn't know a man bought two of the rabbits for stew.xo,Susie

  5. Oh Susie, you are so funny. My dad used to go hunting every season, and he wanted us to try everything, so I tried venison and even abalone that a friend brought over. Never had rabbit before.

How sweet of Savannah to name all the rabbits. Those chocolate bunnies look so good. Have a nice weekend, Susie.

    love,

    1. No, I no fan of venison either. You would think I'd lose weight being this picky about eating. I think it's only meat products that make me this way. xoxo,Susie

  6. Sheri, love your vignette of rabbits. I once was a collector of rabbits. Had so many that when I opened a booth, I got rid of them. Now I only collect ironstone and milk glass.

    1. I know you had soup beans and cornbread. Gee, that was about the only things we ate at times. Well none of us died of hunger...sure though I would at times. LOL. xo,Susie

  8. We raised our own livestock, too. Our kids learned not to name the meat hens, and the cattle.
If a rabbit was large, and white...they also went nameless.
    Have a nice weekend, Susie.

    1. That is clever. So at the table you could say , "please pass the chicken" not , Could you please pass old George .LOL
Hope you have a great weekend to Debbie. Praying everything is good with you. xoxo,Susie

  9. Definitely chocolate bunny time!

We ate the chickens that were on the place, but I've never had rabbit. There weren't any around when I was growing up, and my father was not a hunter.

    Enjoy this Friday! xo Nellie

  10. Oh it would be so hard to eat an animal you'd raised and loved. But when times are tough, you gotta do what you've gotta do. :-( I think chocolate bunnies are a better idea. Things will be hoppin' around your daughter's house for sure! Lol

    1. You know those chicken just ran wild, once they were turned loose, there was not petting them...so that's probably just as well. The only bunnies I am eating any more are going to be chocolate.:) xo,Susie

  13. Cute little choco bunnies there, Susie. We ate a lot of chicken growing up on a farm and I think I ate rabbit a couple of times. Lots of people consider that a delicacy. Not me- they are too cute for me to eat them.

I love how your grands love their pets...and just think-you have two namesakes! xo Diana

    1. I could never tell Emma this...but unless they can really cage the chickens in a heavy duty pen...the varmints may get them.xoxo,Susie

  16. Oh, I'd rather have a chocolate rabbit too! Humm, has me wondering now if my chickens that I raised in 4-H were ever in stew! I thought they went to Mr. L's farm! Oh dear!

  17. We used to have chickens that my grandfather would butcher. I didn't think much of it then. We also had rabbit but it was wild. Oh the memories. I used to find baby rabbits and try to raise them. They always escaped.....mow I wonder how that happened.
